Music I Have Been Listening To Recently (15/02/2022)
I listen to music for enjoyment rather than inspiration but there have been songs I listened to a lot, either because the music inspires me or I simply enjoy them. Here's nine of them, and I will be giving a brief summary of the song's genre and lyrics.
- Someone Else - Private Zero
This song is chill drill from an upcoming UK rapper based in London called Private Zero. The song lyrically details a breakup and how hurt and guilty Zero is by it, however in the second verse he talks about how he has moved on. The song has a female vocal sample in the intro and after the chorus, and an acoustic guitar melody over a trap beat, making this a song you can vibe to and chill to.
- A lot of Kendrick Lamar
As stated in my EPK, Kendrick is my favourite artist. He hasn't released any original music since 2018, so I am currently awaiting a new song by him, however there are rumours he will release a new album this year.
- Wasted - Digga D & ArrDee
This is a catchy drill tune that samples garage classic "Heartbroken" by T2. Lyrically, this is nothing new from Digga D but the beat is infectious, the lyrics are way too catchy and some of ArrDee's lines were quite humourous. Definitely Digga D's best song in my opinion.
- I Love You, I Hate You - Little Simz
Simz released her acclaimed album "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert" in September 2021. The album blends rap with jazz and soul samples and Simz has a chilled delivery in this track, before going in a bit more towards the end of her verses. Even though I only recommended this one song, I would recommend checking out the entire album.
- Less Than Zero - The Weeknd
The Weeknd's new album "Dawn FM" is full of disco and synthwave tracks that sound like the past and the future - this is what I like to call a "sad banger" (upbeat production with melancholy lyrics) and is my favourite track on the album.
- Verdansk - Dave
Streatham rapper Dave has only released amazing music in my opinion. I'm obsessed with every track on this song's parent album but I have been playing this a lot recently. There's also a "Survival Mode" version, which has an extra verse.
- Retail Therapy - Central Cee
Central Cee has become my favourite UK drill artist in recent memory, and although this isn't as good as it's preceding track in my opinion, it's still a really good drill track and even features a bit of trumpet.
- Letter From Houston - Rod Wave
This is the type of rap music that inspires me - melodic rap. This deluxe track from "Pray 4 Love" is my favourite song of Rod Wave's, and it's not even close. Lyrically, it's a love song written on his tour, where Wave is missing his girlfriend and he can't wait to see her again, and he would trade materialistic objects for her.
- traitor - Olivia Rodrigo
Just before Christmas, I decided this song was my favourite song of 2021. It was tough to pick between this, "drivers license" (another Olivia Rodrigo song) and "Obsessed With You" by the aforementioned Central Cee, but I decided to choose the only song I have ever turned the volume up to maximum amount for. This song, like a majority of "SOUR", is a breakup ballad, but it's executed with so much passion and Rodrigo hits a power note towards the end. BRILLIANT tune.
