Case Study - Kendrick Lamar

Image
Introduction As stated in my EPK,  Compton rapper, songwriter and record producer Kendrick Lamar has massively influenced me. Kendrick started rapping as a teenager under the stage n ame K. Dot . He released a mixtape titled "Overly Dedicated" , which garnered local attention and got him signed to record label Top Dawg Entertainment (other signees for TDE include Jay Rock, Isaiah Rashad and SZA) and started gaining popularity in 2010 following the release of "Overly Dedicated" . Since then he has released four albums: "Section.80" (2011), "good kid, m.A.A.d city" (2012), "To Pimp A Butterfly" (2015) and "DAMN." (2017), all to critical acclaim and commercial success. He was creating professional standard music when he started due to being signed as a professional rapper.   Career Lamar had been rapping since 2004, but it wasn't until 2010 until he got recognised by major label TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment) after releasin...

Update (17/03/2022)

In the past week I continued co-operating setting up the microphones - since I have sensitive hearing and tend to struggle with loud noise, I brought earplugs to help me focus without the loud noises hurting my ears and I felt much more comfortable setting the microphones with them in. I remembered to bring them after another student gave us criticism for not being able to set anything up. Music I have been listening to for the past week includes... SINGLES Starlight - Dave Go - Cat Burns No Love - Summer Walker & SZA Night Away (Dance) - A1 x J1 feat. Update (01/03/2022)

Skills I have learned before half-term include me continuously getting better at the mixing desk, rigging and de-rigging the microphones and loading the computers up in order to record the band. I feel like there should be more skills I need to work on. Half term has given me a chance to check out more new music and expand my taste. Over my week off I have been listening to Central Cee's new album "23" - my favourite tracks are "Obsessed With You", "Lil Bro", "Eurovision", "Khabib" and "Retail Therapy". I have also been listening to Chicago rapper Lil Durk and German funk producer Purple Disco Machine, as well as checking out songs in the Top 100 I never knew existed. This Spotify playlist contains a list of songs that have been on rotation for me in the past month:

Weekly Update (17/02/2022)

Over the past week, I didn't get enough time to do studio work, so for the time being I have been tidying up my blog. Over on streaming, I have been digging into more of Kendrick Lamar's discography and had been listening to his unreleased J. Cole collaboration "Black Friday" - in the track, Lamar raps original lyrics over Cole's "A Tale Of 2 Citiez" beat and Cole raps original lyrics over Lamar's "Alright" beat. This has given me more inspiration for song lyrics - last night, I started thinking of a tense story to tell over the beat of "A Tale Of 2 Citiez" and will begin writing soon. Elsewhere, I have branched out of hip-hop and R&B, and have been listening to plenty of pop music, most of them by upcoming pop acts. Here are 9 pop songs that have been on rotation for me this past week: London Is Lonely - Holly Humberstone Fingers Crossed - Lauren Spencer-Smith hope ur ok - Olivia Rodrigo Sacrifice - The Weeknd abcdefu - GAYLE...

Music I Have Been Listening To Recently (15/02/2022)

I listen to music for enjoyment rather than inspiration but there have been songs I listened to a lot, either because the music inspires me or I simply enjoy them. Here's nine of them, and I will be giving a brief summary of the song's genre and lyrics.  Someone Else - Private Zero This song is chill drill from an upcoming UK rapper based in London called Private Zero. The song lyrically details a breakup and how hurt and guilty Zero is by it, however in the second verse he talks about how he has moved on. The song has a female vocal sample in the intro and after the chorus, and an acoustic guitar melody over a trap beat, making this a song you can vibe to and chill to. A lot of Kendrick Lamar As stated in my EPK, Kendrick is my favourite artist. He hasn't released any original music since 2018, so I am currently awaiting a new song by him, however there are rumours he will release a new album this year. Wasted - Digga D & ArrDee This is a catchy drill tune that samples...
